Drivers License Change of Address

Whether you’ve recently moved from another state or are moving from within the state, you will need to update your address with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) and the Division of Drivers Licenses within 30 days of moving. Follow this step-by-step process to ensure the change of address is performed correctly.

Ways to Change Your Address

To update the address on your Driver’s License or ID Card, you can do one of two things:

DHSMV GoRenew

  • Go online to the states DMV website, fill out the required information, and pay a $25 fee.

Division of Driver Licenses

  • Visit a Division of Driver Licenses office in person, provide the required documents, and pay a $25 fee.

A change of address for a commercial driver’s license (CDL) can only be done in person at a Division of Driver Licenses office. In addition, if you are a non-U.S. citizen, you must apply for an address change in person.

Required Documents for a Change of Address

The documents required for completing an address change vary depending on the mode you’ve selected to use. If using the online service system, you will need:

  • The identification number listed on the driver license or ID card.
  • Your date of birth.
  • The last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN).
  • The means with which to pay the required $25 fee.

If you are required to perform a change of address in person at a Division of Driver Licenses office because you are a non-U.S. citizen, are changing the address on a commercial driver’s license (CDL- Class A, B, C), or are choosing the in person method for a standard Class E license or ID card, you will need to bring:

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate (either original or certified copy), or a permanent resident card I-551.

GatherGoGet

  • Proof of your Social Security number (SSN) such as a Social Security card, W-2 form, or letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration along with one document from the GatherGoGet list.
  • Two documents providing proof of residencies, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or school record or transcript.
  • The means with which to pay the required $25 fee.

Paying the Change of Address Fee

Whether you are performing an address change for your drivers license online or in person, there is a fee required. The fees are as follows:

  • Driver’s license: $25
  • Identification card: $25

If performing an address change online, accepted forms of payment include:

  • American Express.
  • Discover.
  • MasterCard.
  • VISA.

If performing an address change in person at a Division of Driver Licenses office, accepted forms of payment include:

  • American Express.
  • Discover.
  • MasterCard.
  • VISA.
  • Cash.
  • Check.

While you are updating your driver’s license, you will also want to update your vehicle registration and voter registration with your current address. Having everything current will allow you to be notified of important information such as when your vehicle registration renewal date is approaching.
